What is the 4-point system?

4-Point System:

The 4-point system, a standard established under ASTM D5430 – 07(2011), is a standardized test method for visually inspecting and grading fabrics. The final purpose is to identify the defects in the fabric per 100 square yards.

4-point system.

Fabric defects are assigned points based on the following:

  Size of defect                                                         Points

 Up to 3 inches                                                         1

Above 3 up to 6 inches                                            2

Above 6 up to 9 inches                                            3

Over 9 inches                                                          4

  • Maximum 4 points per yard allowed.
  • Total points per 100 sq yards = (sum of defect points × 36 × 100) / (fabric width × inspected length)
  • Roll accepted if points ≤ buyer limit.
